Lipid Barrier

The skin's outer layer is comprised of lipids and cells. It's a waterproof barrier that keeps electrolytes and moisture from escaping and protects you from harmful irritants. When your lipid barrier is weakened, you can experience skin sensitivities and even premature aging. Additional signs of a weakened lipid barrier are dull skin, redness, inflammation, itchiness, acne, and eczema. So, how can you go about restoring your skin's protective barrier? Here are some tips: (1) Choose moisturizers containing ceramides like safflower oil or grapeseed oil. (2) Always wear SPF. (3) Get adequate sleep to reduce stress. (4) Avoid foaming cleansers and use a mild face cleanser instead. (5) Avoid alcohol-based toners that can dry out your skin.
