Most people think that skincare for anti-aging happens in front of the bathroom mirror, where they use firming facial serums, skin care creams, and a few hopeful pats around the eyes. But the shower, which is often where your day starts or ends, can quietly undo all of that work.

It’s a funny contradiction, isn’t it? Something as comforting as warm water and soap can actually push your skin toward dryness, irritation, and premature aging. Yet once you understand the habits at play, adjusting them feels surprisingly easy.

Here are a few common shower mistakes that can age your skin over time.
