With International Women's Day only one day away, it seems fitting to give tribute to where this movement has come from. International Women's Day began in 1910 when Clara Zetkin proposed that countries worldwide celebrate a day during which women's issues could be highlighted. This proposal was unanimously approved at the International Conference of Working Women. The next year, the first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19 in Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and Germany. In 1913, the celebration day was changed to March 8 and has been internationally celebrated on that day ever since.
International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, is a day for honoring the achievements of women in every sector of society and in all societies around the world. This day is also meant to bring together activist groups and highlight the amazing things they are accomplishing toward gender parity. The theme this year is this: #ChooseToChallenge! The official statement proclaims: "A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions—all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world."
